I processi di fabbricazione digitale e i software di progettazione parametrica stanno influenzando i metodi, le teorie ed il pensiero progettuale architettonico. I sistemi cad/cam hanno avuto quello scarto nella loro evoluzione tali da poterli considerare strumenti di massa alla portata del progettista.
I partecipanti al workshop avranno la possibilità di approcciare nuove dinamiche progettuali indagandone le possibilità, i limiti e le prospettive.
L’obiettivo che il workshop si pone è di fornire ai partecipanti un bagaglio di tecniche, teorie e metodi sull’utilizzo di software di progettazione parametrici e di macchine di fabbricazione digitale..
La seconda edizione del ws avrà luogo in Italia, alle porte della Costiera Amalfitana, nella città di Vietri sul Mare . L’Unesco ha dichiarato dal 1997 Vietri sul Mare (insieme agli altri paesi della costiera amalfitana) Patrimonio dell’Umanità. Per tale ragione tutta la fascia costiera e’ stata oggetto di interventi di riqualificazione ambientale ed urbana tesi a non alterare le condizioni di equilibrio nel rapporto acqua-terra. Queste ultime infatti, coprono tutto l’arco delle possibili relazioni morfologiche presenti in tutta la costiera amalfitana tra il mare e la terra ferma. Dalla spiaggia allo strapiombo, e dalla gola tra le rocce alla piccola insenatura di sabbia il tratto costiero di Vietri sul mare offre una varieta di relazioni tra diversi elementi naturali ed ecosistemi ed un grado dibiodiversita’ molto elevato . Per tale motivo Il topic della seconda edizione del Digitalmedworkshop è centrato sugli ecotoni, come aree di mediazione e di transizione tra ecosistemi differenti. Il brano della costa scelto come oggetto del workshop e’ delimitato da due spuntoni di roccia presenta straordinarie opportunità progettuali.

Co-de-iT will partecipate as main tutors at DigitalMed 2011 workshop together many other tutors.

Description:

The processes of digital fabrication and software of parametric design have been influencing the methods, theories and architectural design thinking. The systems of cad/cam have been through such an evolution that they can be considered an instrument of mass production for the designer.
The participants to the workshop will have the opportunity to approach the new dynamic design investigations their possibilities, their limitation and their prospects.
The objective arisen from the workshop provides the participants with the techniques, theories and methods for the utilisation of the software of parametric design and the machines of digital fabrication.
This second workshop will take place in Italy, at Amalfi Cost, in the city Vietri sul Mare, declared as as world heritage site since 1997 (including other villages of Amalfi Cost). The zone of the cost has been the object of interventions due to its environmental restoration and urban approach in order not to alter the conditions of equilibrium between earth and water. In fact these last two conditions, cover/generate all (the arc of) the possibilities related to the morphology present in all the Amalfi Cost between the sea and the ground. From the beach to the cliff and from the gorge to the rocks, to the smallest grain of sand, the stretch of the cost of Vietri sul Mare offers a variety of relationships between diverse natural elements and ecosystems and a high degree of biodiversity. Therefore, the topic of the second Digital Workshop is focused on the ecotone, as mediation area and transition between different ecosystems. The part of the cost chosen as object for the workshop is surrounded by two crags of rocks offering extraordinary opportunities for design.

Si tratta di un corso di scripting basato su RhinoCommon e sul suo utilizzo all’interno di Grasshopper. Il corso è concepito per consentire all’utente di ottenere di più da questo programma di algorithmic modeling ed ha come scopo quello di introdurre al mondo della programmazione ed sperimentare soluzioni più complesse ed interattive. Verranno anche esplorati modelli di programmazione complessa. Non c’è un linguaggio di programmazione ufficiale in quanto è possibile per i partecipanti utilizzare sia C# che VB.net, e tutti gli esempi verranno forniti in entrambe i linguaggi. Inoltre, sarà illustrato come iniziare a scrivere plugins completi .Net. Infine, ci sarà tempo per esplorare le proposte personali dei partecipanti durante il terzo giorno.

Il numero dei partecipanti è fissato a un massimo di 20 per offrire un tutoraggio proficuo ed una effettiva esperienza di learning ad ogni iscritto.

This is a scripting course based on RhinoCommon and its utilization within Grasshopper. It is designed to allow the user to accomplish more with this algorithmic modeling program and has the goal to enter the programming world and tinker more complex, interactive solutions. We will also explore advanced programming paradigms. There is no class official programming language, as both C# and Vb.Net are possible on the participant’s side, and all examples will be provided in both C# and Vb.Net. Additionally, we will see how to get started writing full .Net plug-ins. Finally, we will have time to explore user’s own proposals on the third day.

The participants number is established to a maximum of 20 people in order to ensure a fruitful tutoring as well as a consistent learning experience to all participants.

abstract

We are experiencing a crisis, and facing it we are not able anymore to understand it or finding solutions to it without a paradimg shift in our thinking. Such shift involves theories about complexity, emergence, network, self-organization, material systems, digital tools and their consequences on our model of reality, knowledge, cognition, culture, economy, ecology and, ultimately, architecture.

What is the common element in this network of interconnected systems? All of them are operating in a continuous changing condition (far from equilibrium) and rely on information (matter-energy) exchange. Information lies at the bottom of physical things, it is involved in morphogenesis as well as in the evolution of culture and communication.

We’ll take a look on how information plays that role in nature (as well as what nature is under this perspective) and in architecture, especially in its linkages with digital tools and generative and parametric approaches.

in[form]ation is a lecture about the role of information (both as knowledge unit and morphogenetic driver) in generative processes and design strategies in the world of complexity. How do we move from a crisis towards an improved awareness of nature as a system of emergent processes, non linear networks and digital tools as media for design and production? The lecture tries to address this multiplicitous question, and since february 2009, when it was first presented, it was changed ad evolved to the present set of slides.

TAC - Technically Advanced Construction

Technically Advanced Construction is a new postgraduate course for graduates and professionals established by the Department of Building Environment Science and Technology (BEST), Politecnico di Milano. It will run for three months and will allow participants to achieve high levels of knowledge in the design-to-production process through the use of advanced digital tools for design and machines for the creation of physical models.

The entire course, based at the Polytechnic of Milan, will take place through studies, workshops and working periods assisted (during the development, manufacture and test trial) by a team of highly skilled professionals and teachers (from studies and international schools like AA London, ARUP, Buro Happold, Zaha Hadid, Gehry Technologies, SPAN Architects ...).

The objective is to design, prototype, and finally test “multi-performative skins” through computational design software. Audits in progress performance of the “skin” will be the main feedback to optimize the final design.

The course will be completed by a series of public lectures held by the same course tutors and other professionals and teachers of international renown.

The course will start on January 17, 2011 and will end on April 15, 2011 (daily attendance).

TAC Technically Advanced Construction è un corso di perfezionamento per laureati e professionisti promosso dal Dipartimento di Scienza e Tecnologie dell’Ambiente Costruito (BEST) del Politecnico di Milano. Avrà una durata di tre mesi e permetterà ai partecipanti di raggiungere livelli specifici di conoscenza nel processo di "design-to-production" tramite l’uso di strumenti digitali avanzati per la progettazione e macchinari per la creazione e lo sviluppo di modelli fisici.

L’intero corso, con sede al Politecnico di Milano, si svolgerà attraverso studi, workshop, e periodi di lavoro costantemente assistiti (durante lo sviluppo, la fabbricazione e i test di prova) da uno staff di professionisti e insegnanti altamente specializzati (provenienti da studi e scuole internazionali come AA London, ARUP, Buro Happold, Zaha Hadid, Gehry Technologies, SPAN Architects...).

Digital tools as strategies for architetctural design is a workshop I recently held in AIU - Arab International University in Damascus, together with Aref Maksoud.

The workshop is an exploration about different ways to generate architectural outcomes through the translation of information-based and information-driven morphogenetic processes via digital tools.

The students, working in groups, should create an architectural skin (an enveloping system with structural capacity, able to generate space and mediate environmental conditions via information processing) based on morphogenetic strategies, conditions and information extracted and translated from their investigations and experimentations.

Students are asked to design an architectural piece which primary function is light treatment, but also spatially able to choreograph human movement in terms of fluxes, play and effects, altering an existing place within the AIU (whether inside the building or outside in the garden). The focus of the project is on how light manipulation (how to treat it, how to play with it, how intense/intricate/dimmed/choreographic/theatrical/etc. they want it to be) in a spatial artifact can affect the perception and use of a known space.

The main objective is to extract the information from the research as an input in order to generate a new 3D spatial output, communicating the design process through the digital skills taught during the workshop.

La proliferazione è una modalità di occupazione dello spazio. In dipendenza dal proprio modo di interazione ambientale, gli edifici possono essere distrubuiti e/o aggregati in modalità appropriate in modo da accumulare o disperdere gli effetti della loro interazione e il proprio impatto sull'evoluzione delle relazioni future. A livelli più bassi si può, ad esempio, considerare la distribuzione di componenti o caratteristiche lungo un involucro.
Approcci basati su unità funzionali operano una proliferazione basata sulla ripetizione indifferenziata e insensibile all'ambiente, risultando in una discretizzazione di matrice convenzionale e nella separazione tra edifici, edifici e contesto o spazi interni ed esterni; un diverso tipo di approccio, basato sulla condizione (termine usato nella sua doppia accezione di indicatore dinamico della tendenza di sviluppo dell'ecosistema e in quella causale – if a then b), introduce una forma di proliferazione che sfida e scioglie la dicotomia artificiale: molte piante crescono ovunque le condizioni portino ad esse beneficio, senza riguardo per limiti codificati nello spazio in cui si sviluppano. Le implicazioni sulla negoziazione dello spazio e sulla definizione di soglia sono notevoli; il sistema produce un campo armonicamente articolato e differenziato di fenotipi a partire dal genotipo attraverso un processo di "estetica delle forze" guidata attraverso lo strumento digitale.
A livello urbano questo può tradursi nella proliferazione di infrastrutture o di spazi che mettono in discussione la concezione statica di "confine" e "unità" in favore di modelli in grado di generare una gamma più estesa di inflessioni tra livelli di complessità e indirizzarli per abilitare e rendere accessibili potenzialità d'uso a loro volta articolate e complesse.
Il tema sarà dipanato attraverso le giornate del workshop sviluppando aspetti teorici e tecnici dell'approccio parametrico generativo, con particolare attenzione a strategie di design urbano basate su caratteristiche endogene (vincoli interni del sistema) ed esogene (fattori ambientali) allo scopo di stimolare l'esplorazione di soluzioni sistemiche innovative.

Il numero dei partecipanti è stabilito tra le 15 e le 20 persone per offrire un tutoraggio proficuo ed una effettiva esperienza di learning ad ogni iscritto.

L'ecotono è la zona di transizione tra due o più ecosistemi, ed è la zona in cui si manifestano in modo più evidente i temi di soglia, gradiente, variazione, catastrofe, dove le condizioni di limite e transizione possono essere esplorate trasformandole in configurazioni formali e architettoniche interessanti. Il workshop mira ad indagare strategie attraverso cui si manifestano le condizioni di transizione tra ecosistemi, sia in termini spaziali (dalla scala territoriale alla scala dei componenti) che in termini di evoluzione o ciclicità temporale (condizioni critiche come i cicli notte/giorno nelle zone desertiche). Il tema dell'eleganza riguarda il modo in cui il sistema produce un campo armonicamente articolato e differenziato di fenotipi a partire dal genotipo attraverso un processo di "estetica delle forze" guidata attraverso lo strumento digitale.

Il tema sarà dipanato attraverso le giornate del workshop sviluppando aspetti teorici e tecnici dell'approccio parametrico generativo, con particolare attenzione a strategie di design basate su caratteristiche endogene (vincoli interni del sistema) ed esogene (fattori ambientali) allo scopo di stimolare l'esplorazione di soluzioni sistemiche innovative.

Co-de-iT is a connectivity HUB for computation, design, research & teaching in architecture. Project development and consultancy happen here, both first person by our team members or by building communication with specific required knowledge subjects, bridging different fields to the project.

Co-de-iT promotes (in Italy and abroad) events and workshops about digital tools and generative methodology into architectural and design process.

Co-de-iT operates as a catalyzer in the architectural process to trigger and engage (both conceptually and technically) levels of complexity and differentiation as an evolved answer to project instances that range from conceptual design to personalized fabrication.

The work, that led to the design of the new winery for “Consorzio Vini Tipici di San Marino”, started with research about the shift of paradigm (from mechanicistic to ecological) that is affecting all the fields of human activity and consequently the architectural one. The new paradigm reveals how life on Earth belong to a big single web-system structured on many levels. This system is composed by all the environments and by all the living creatures that composed them, mutually influencing themselves in a cyclical way. The application of these ideas in architecture develops a new sensitivity that, starting from deep researches in the field of biology, studies how natural systems grow, differentiate and relate themselves with the external environment. The extrapolation of these natural laws, and its application in architectural field, allow to study, in depth and in a more efficient way, the relationship between the project and the environment (physical, cultural, social) which is located in.

From this point of view was developed a research on the algorithm of phyllotaxis: a system of natural closest packing that plants use to organize the arrangement of their lateral organs (leaves on a stem, scales on a cone axis, florets in a composite flower head) to optimize their exposure to rainfall and sunlight. The algorithm was reproduced, through the use of parametric design software (rhinoscript and grasshopper), and utilized for a case study on the generation of architectural shape. Subsequent elaborations allowed to link the algorithm of phyllotaxis to Incident Solar Radiation analysis on the architectural surfaces. In this way I could differentiate structure's permeability to sunlight on the basis of environmental data. The interaction between the algorithm (endogenous bind) and the solar gradient (exogenous bind), allows to generate an architectural shape directly influenced by the environment in which is located.

This research was applied to the design of the new winery for “Consorzio Vini Tipici di San Marino”. A winery is a complex system that made necessary a deep analysis of the relationship between the inner activities and the environmental factors. This interaction, between project and site, allowed to organize a gravity system of reception of grapes, with a remarkable increase of quality of produced wine. Besides, sightseeing areas were integrated in the inner work spaces to permit a complete comprehension of the “wine cycle” by the visitors. Solved the functional structure of the building, the algorithm of phyllotaxis was used to create multiperformance membranes that perform structural function of covering and adjustment of sunlight permeability at the same time. In this way, in every area of the winery, variation of sunlight permeability allowed to create heterogeneous working environment in which coexist working areas (with excellent natural lighting levels) and storage areas (with low lighting levels that contribute to a better maturation of wine).

Flowers are considered mainly as symbols of grace, beauty, fragility and transiency of things. They were the very first form of human body decoration (such as jewels), used to enhance seductive qualities. Besides their semiologic value, flowers are exceptional organs in which performance and economy of form are highly evolved: space, structure and material are tightly connected to environmental behavior.

Flowering plants, thanks to sexuated reproduction, are one of the most adaptive specie; flowers are their sexual organs. Entomophilous flowers rely on insects as hosts to perform sexuated reproduction (through pollination), so they base their reproductive potential on attraction. Differently from anemophilous flowers (which rely on wind and are mostly white and inodor), entomophilous show a wider range of forms, spatial organizations, color patterns and odors. Beauty then performs an essential function, triggering different strategies which are actuated through morphological conditions.

Starting from the analysis of the properties of the Cyclamen Graecum, we investigated the particular conditions of its petals: they are the main tool through which the flower signals its presence to insects. In the Cyclamen the weight of the head bends the stem downward, thus easing insect approaching from below, while petals elongate and bend upward signaling the flower position, creating a very interesting topological condition around the corolla. Their plication creates a continuous passage from outer to inner space, just like some typical topological surfaces, such as the Klein Bottle, which are continuously spatially connected. The differentiation of inner spaces out of continuous surfaces is a typical topological condition in living organisms and it is a phenomenon which starts in the embryo, when the initial cell aggregation (blastula) starts bending inward and creates the first spatial differentiation between outside and inside; it is called gastrulation. Another concept related to the Klein Bottle, this time from the side of mathematics, is involution, a mathematical function which applied twice brings back to the starting point.

The petals condition (along with the concepts of involution, gastrulation and with the translucency and color properties of the petals) was then explored under TopMod®, a topological mesh modeler, testing different strategies within an open process that led to the final shape through generative process driven by the program and a selection criteria based on consistency with the conceptual basis, avoiding a mere biomorphic translation.

The pavilion is a continuous surface that differentiates environment into 3 different spaces: an exterior outside the pavilion in which the envelope surface defines the overall shape and two different interior spaces, a ring that embraces a court and creates different gradients of use within it. Different gradients of transparency/translucency, established according to a map of activities based on performative qualities of morphology, are implemented through the use of holes in the surface and not only relying on material properties (pigmentation).

Knowledge, as any other thing, evolves in space and time, differentiating in complexity, developing and regressing its aspects throughout the whole process. Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" makes no exception: far from being a theory carved in stone out of pure thought, it evolved and changed as Darwin's studies went further on. Ben Fry, thanks to the effort made by Dr. John van Wyhe, et al. who run The Complete Work of Charles Darwin Online, released The Preservation of Favoured traces, a tool that allows users to watch the book evolve across its six editions as Darwin reconsidered his arguments (also in response to the period's criticisms). In the next september 3 & 4 I'll be presenting a short paper called "Porosity by Curvature" at the File 2 Factory international conference.

The conference is about processes that generate continuous paths from the digital design to fabrication techniques. In my paper I will briefly discuss the theoretical premises of a small fabrication experiment as a proof of concept in the investigation of implicit geometry properties (in this case curvature). Those properties are not only abstract cartesian mathematical concepts, but in a space which is fully permeated with continuous gradients of force fields they are virtual properties (which can actualize into a shape) affecting morphogenesis. On top of that, fabrication tools and techniques add their own properties in the mix, endowing the final product with the possibility to exhibit emergent properties which are not present in the digital model. On this point many translations from the digital are considered a failure just because they do not match the digital image, and a lot of effort is put on the attempt to domesticate machines and get as close as possible to the "perfection" of the digital: my opinion is that the "perfection of the digital" is a misleading concept, I rather think that the digital model is missing exactely material system characters, which are properties of fabrication techniques and materials used. What is generally considered an "imperfection" is in my opinion an emergent property endowed by the physical actualization of the model.

AAST exhibition opens now in Piazza dei Mestieri in Torino, a wonderful place held by a fundation that aims at introducing young people in the working world through several labs inspired by old piazzas where different activities spontaneously once met and exchanged skills and products. There are kitchen, food and applied arts labs; among all these activities soaked in a nice atmosphere, they also brew their own beers that you can taste and buy at the inner pub.

Ahem... back to the exhibition, this time all the panels create an enclosure around the models, solving the exhibition path in a ring between the two.

The event will take place at the Politecnico di Milano on wednesday, may 6, and thursday, may 7, with a rich range of relevant speakers such as Matias Del Campo (SPAN), Marc Fornes (THEVERYMANY), Arnold Waltz (Design to Production), Cristiano Ceccato (Zaha Hadid Architects).

My paper (Processing Nature) will try to investigate and shade some light on the relationships among nature as a complex adaptive system, digital technology, information management, complex morphologies.

AAST conference+exhibition

I must say I spent a couple of amazing days in Torino. Thanks to the effort of Andrea Graziano and Davide Del Giudice who first envisioned the potential and the possibility of this event and Lorena Alessio and all the people at CASARTARC who believed in that idea and made it real.

We started with a nice and interesting opening conference by Filippo Innocenti on april 7th, and straight after we opened the projects exhibition in Settimo Torinese. Although I spotted a familiar face in an english speaking guy at the opening venue I didn't recognize him, until he uploaded some exhibition photos on his Flickr: mr. Bruce Sterling!

The conference day (april 8th, in Torino) was really dense and with high-level contributions from all the participants (Annarita Papeschi, Fulvio Wirz, Ludovico Lombardi, Marco Vanucci in the morning and Federico Rossi, Ludovica Tramontin, Edmondo Occhipinti and myself in the afternoon), also well moderated by Andrea Graziano and Cesare Griffa. I had much insight from all of the people there, and had the really nice pleasure to know everyone better, hopefully starting some interesting things for the next future. One last (but not least) note on the conference place: Piazza dei Mestieri is a really nice meltin' pot of activities and schools, equipped with a large conference room and on top of that an inner brewery!

The exhibition (featuring a great selection of projects from italian and international designers, including A.V.A.E.'s [attr]-action project) is open until may 17, go and check it out! AAST è un evento sulla advanced architecture che avrà luogo i prossimi 7 e 8 aprile a Settimo Torinese. E' uno dei più importanti (se non il più importante finora) eventi sull'argomento in Italia, per portata e dimensione, ed avrà luogo grazie ai devoti sforzi di Andrea Graziano e Davide Del Giudice e il supporto di CASARTARC.

Ho il piacere e l'onore di essere tra gli speakers invitati alla conferenza e il progetto [attr]-action sarà esposto alla mostra collegata all'evento. Non vedo l'ora di incontrare gli altri a quello che si annuncia un momento molto interessante di scambio culturale e un gran bell'evento.

Oltre al simposio e alla mostra partiranno 5 workshop tra giugno e novembre 2009, uno dei quali mi vedrà tutor insieme a Ludovica Tramontin.

AAST is an event about advanced architecture that willl take place next april 7th and 8th in Settimo Torinese, Italy. Beijing (very) late report

This photo (i downloaded it some time ago and I don't remember the author - please excuse me if you consider this an improper use of your pic, if you recognize this as being your photo please contact me and I will credit you or remove it as you whish), ehr.. this photo, as I was saying, testifies the selected work done at the ESARQ in Barcelona that was exhibited at the last Beijing Architecture Biennale. Top right you can see the [attr]-action project, done by me and Antonio Vacca (see this post) and bottom left you can see the class master project, Tencellity Tower, which was also mentioned some posts ago. In the opposite diagonal, top left to bottom right: projects by Aref Maksoud & Anas Katramiz and Julian Ardila & Andrea Macruz. It was a nice reward for us (in its small appearence) even though I have to say many more of the master projects deserved a place under the spotlight.

As a morphological result of minimal effort for self-stability, minimal surfaces are a very interesting topic. How can they be deployed over a larger system and how is it possible to test their performative potential?

This test was held as a part of investigation over multi-performative structural membranes. A saddle component, designed inside Scherk-Collins Sculpture Generator , was used with Paneling Tools in Rhino to populate a surface. The result was then exported to Autodesk Maya for the final render in Mental Ray. You can check the images also here, and in the Paneling Tools Gallery page.

Anyway, this is just a spare-time test.

The relation between intensive and extensive systems is one of the crucial point for the evolution of both architectonic research and practice. Processes of mass production are on the brink of quite a leap thanks to a day by day increasing application of robotics; yet, they still mostly rely on panelization. Of course, assembling is not the only existing technology.

Knots and weaving are one of the common technologies available in nature. Many organisms (like weaver birds) use them to build stable constructions out of relatively weak material. Biomimicring this process already led to interesting results in terms of material (all woven fibers, including carbon fiber, for example) and small scale design application.

DUM:ENE.COM shows an interesting, point of view on the problem: robotically controlled continuous weaving and winding, based on a reverse-engineered application of the Doo-Sabin tessellation algorithm. The aim is to produce a continuous mesh based on a rough scaffold (which is found starting from the final surface by reversing the Doo Sabin) which serves as a rigid initial sustain. The final product of the process is an open structural lattice that can serve multiple purposes, and several final applications from tensed or inflated membranes to rigid shells and locally or regionally modulated by densifying the weaving. This group show a thick and consistent research line about self-replication, self-similarity and differentiation in growing structures as well as in recursive subdivisions (tessellation) of space and surfaces. The use of well-known algorithm (well known for code monkeys of course...) here leads to show elegant, remarkable outcomes.

. we started monday (and now we are almost at the end of the path) a new studio, or, better, we are finishing Dennis Dollens' Studio (always inside the ESARQ master in Biodigital Architecture) with a Tensegrity Tower model, hybridized with cell structure. It's a 10 meters tall tower, and the cells are made with shaped plywood milled on the ESARQ 3-axys CNC machine. Puzzled? Take a look at the blog then.

Da gennaio ho cominciato un Master in Architettura Biodigitale presso l'ESARQ, Universitat internacional de Catalunya, a Barcellona.

Il master è articolato in studi, ognuno dei quali coordinato da un professore diverso. Dallo scorso lunedì fino al 29.02 il professore è Matias Del Campo, e lo studio si chiama Floral Obsession.

Dopo una quasi-monografia spagnola ecco un autore giapponese, poco noto se volete, tuttavia interessante. Più che una spinta ricerca sul diagramma come paradigma spaziale oltre che funzionale (oggetto di approfondimento teorico e progettuale da parte dei SANAA, di cui vorrei trattare in un futuro post), Sou Fujimoto incentra il proprio lavoro sulla declinazione contemporanea di abitare come reinterpretazione di habitus (vestito) ma anche della derivazione dalla radice habere, cioè avere, occupare. Ma anche sul tema di ambiente come luogo in cui avviene una relazione con l'altro da sè.

Beh, pare che mi sia proprio affezionato alla penisola Iberica.... anche i NOLASTER vengono da lì. Si nota, dai loro progetti, come l'attenzione per il sistema di vita da instaurare nel progetto sia il punto di partenza che poi informa le trame spaziali. In accordo con una linea culturale assolutamente comtemporanea, il gioco delle forme è solo l'aspetto più epidermico e meno fondante (per quanto importante) del progetto: vengono usate, di volta in volta, geometrie euclidee, topologiche, cristalline, a testimonianza che la coerenza linguistica è storia del progetto in sè, non un marchio di riconoscimento da portarsi dietro (un must questo, invece, tipico di un certo star-system architettonico).

Da vedere quelli che loro stessi segnalano come top 5: Casa OS, Europan 8, casa INES, campus de Granada, Santiago el Verde.

Ancora una coppia di spagnoli in quella che sta diventando una carrellata di segnalazioni. Come nei casi precedenti, anche questa firma spagnola ha una attenta considerazione per gli aspetti legati alla new-ecology e al territorio inteso in senso lato. Il progetto per l'Agenzia Andalusa per l'Energia (nell'immagine) è particolarmente degno di attenzione.

Proseguo questa carrellata di segnalazioni con uno studio tedesco dal forte impatto dinamico e cromatico, con una personale concezione della tettonica spaziale (in parte derivata dalla ricerca di Zaha Hadid).

Un paio di ottimi scozzesi. Non si parla di whiskey single malt, ma di uno studio fondato da una coppia di architetti che opera in modo piuttosto interessante, con un linguaggio sostanzialmente sobrio (salvo qualche complicazione di tipo tettonico) che cerca di ridefinire alcune relazioni tra natura, artificio e uomo.

Il progetto per Portree (nell'immagine) merita particolare attenzione anche per l'attenzione alla gestione delle risorse energetiche.

Segnalo il sito di questi architetti iberici (forse non troppo o non abbastanza conosciuti) per la loro notevole forza progettuale e attenzione ad aspetti quali la partecipazione, la territorialità e la capacità di pensare il progetto come un sistema aperto. Dateci un'occhiata, ne vale la pena.

Una nuvola elettronica per parlare di architettura.
Della nuvola poco mi importa, in realtà, la sua forma; essa è invece evocata in quanto limite estremo di flessibilità, interattività, complessità e logica sistemica "aperta". Così in questo blog vorrei che si parlasse di architettura (e di tutte le materie che accidentalmente o intenzionalmente ad essa si correlano, ad ogni scala, dall'ambiente domenstico alla nanourbanistica), con molta apertura, pluralità, interazione, senza l'impegno ad "insegnare" o "catechizzare".
A poco a poco, interventi e commenti formeranno una costellazione complessa e interagente di opinioni e teorie (o almeno così vorrei che fosse), caleidoscopica e a volte anche contraddittoria, ma ricca di stimoli e feconda di idee (o almeno spero!).
Forse l'eterogeneità dell'impostazione creerà inizialmente qualcosa di poco identificabile, ma spero che con il crescere dei contributi si riesca a "densificare" un nucleo tematico riconoscibile attorno a cui fluttua il tutto.
Il tutto con leggerezza, ma, per citare Calvino nelle sue lezioni americane "non mi interessa la leggerezza della piuma, bensì quella dell'ala". Pochi formalismi se possibile e molta sostanza (anche qualche battuta, certo!), quasi fosse un dialogo, anche se a distanza (di tempo e spazio) indefinita.

Benvenuti, spero di vedervi spesso da queste parti.
